African Mahogany heartwood ranges from light to deep reddish-brown in color. Grain is straight to interlocked. It's texture is medium to coarse. Logs may have brittle or soft heartwood and sometimes fractures or heartbreaks. Weight is about 24lbs to 36lbs per cu. ft.

Ash heartwood is a grayish-brown, sometimes with a red tinge. It is generally straight grained and coarse, but with a smooth texture. Weight ranges from about 35lbs to 41lbs per cu. ft.

Beech is primarily reddish-brown in color and slightly coarse with conspicuous rays and tiny pores. The grain is straight with a fine, even texture. Weight is about 46lbs per cu. ft.

Birch has light yellow sapwood and reddish brown heartwood. Once stained, the color differences are less pronounced. It has straight, close grain and a fine, even texture. Weight is about 44lbs per cu. ft.

Black Walnut heartwood is rich dark brown to purplish-black and is usually straight grained. Wavy or curly grain is sometimes present. Texture is coarse. Weight averages about 40lbs per cu. ft.

Bloodwood heartwood varies from gray-red to a deep rich red. Grain varies from straight to variable. It's texture is fine and smooth. The wood is lustrous and sometimes has variegated yellow and red stripes. Weight is about 63lbs per cu. ft.

Heartwood varies from pale yellowish-brown to pale olive-brown streaked with olive green, dark gray, or pinkish-brown, and when mineral stained, streaks of steel blue. Grain is usually straight, regular, fine texture. Weight is about 31 lb per cu. ft.

Cherry heartwood varies from rich red to reddish-brown. The sapwood is white.  It has a fine, straight grain with narrow brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. It has a smooth texture. Weight is about 36lbs per cu. ft.

Cocobolo heartwood varies in color from rich red to an attractive variegated appearance of yellow, orange, and red streaks and zones, which mature upon exposure to a mellow orange red. The grain is irregular and varied, but has a fine uniform texture. It is a hard timber weighing from about 61-75 lbs per cu. ft.

Hard maple is creamy white with a reddish tinge and usually has a straight grain, sometimes curly or wavy. Fine brown growth rings give an attractive figure on plain sawn surfaces. Rays are longer than in Soft Maple. Texture is fine and even. Weight averages about 45lbs per cu. ft.

Goncalo Alves is reddish-brown in color, richly mottled and with dark brown streaks and spots similar to Rosewood. Grain is irregular, and interlocked with alternating layers of hard and soft wood. Texture is medium. Weight is 59lbs per cu. ft.

Hickory heartwood is brown or reddish brown in color and is sold as "Red Hickory ". The sapwood is light in color and sold as "White Hickory ". Hickory is typically straight grained, but can be wavy or irregular. Texture is somewhat coarse. Weight averages about 51lbs per cu. ft.

Ipe heartwood is olive-brown with lighter or darker streaks. Grain is straight to irregular with a low to medium luster. The pores appear as fine yellow dots and contain yellowish lapachol powder which turns deep red in alkaline solutions. Texture is fine and appears oily. Fine ripple marks may be present. Weight varies between 60lbs to 75 lbs per cu. ft.

Jatoba heartwood is salmon red to orange-brown marked with dark brown streaks. It has a golden luster. Grain is usually interlocked with a medium to coarse texture. Weight is about 56lbs per cu.ft.

Color is pink to reddish brown, and is highly figured with a distinct small lacelike pattern. Grain is straight with a fine to medium texture. Weight is about 39lbs per cu. ft.

Makore heartwood varies from pinkish-red to blood red and red-brown. Grain is usually straight, but many logs have a decorative moire pattern, or mottled, or even dark streaks. It's texture is uniform and fine. The wood is lustrous. Weight is about 39lbs per cu. ft.

African Padauk heartwood is vivid blood red, toning down to a dark purple-brown with red streaks upon exposure. Grain is straight to interlocked. Texture is similar to African mahogany, being slightly open grained. Weight varies from about 40lbs to 50lbs per cu. ft.

The clearly defined heartwood is dark brown, with very close, fine, almost black veins. The closely spaced whitish bands of parenchyma give the wood a most attractive appearance. It is fairly straight grained with a coarse texture. Weight is 55 lbs per cu. ft.

Yellow Heart heartwood is bright yellow in color throughout the wood. Fine straight grain. Weight varies from about 45lbs to 48lbs per cu. ft.

Zebrawood heartwood is a golden-yellow with narrow veining or streaks of dark brown to black which gives quartered surfaces a zebra-stripe appearance. Grain is interlocked or wavy and produces alternating hard and soft grained material. Texture is coarse with a lustrous surface. Weight is about 46lbs per cu. ft.
